It is night and I felt a desire to write about our reward that we have in our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. I do not often write rhymes or lyrics and have never really studied such things in detail.
I wrote this because I was thinking about how utterly transforming the gospel is and how radical the Christianity that Jesus Christ spoke of us. The world thinks we’re crazy when we live like the Lord commands and calls us to. But how great a joy and what amazing peace and assurance there is in loving the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves!
Another reason I wrote this is because I am tired of people who call themselves Christians not taking into account the importance of missionary work and the type of obedience that Jesus calls us to. We are to give our lives and follow Him, no matter where He leads us. If He calls us to a place where we are the only one who stands for Him and they decide to kill us, so be it. Therefore, I also wrote this as a sort of encouragement to missions and the missionaries that go on them.
Another way to talk about this post is to say that is notes the difference between true Christianity as Jesus Christ told it, and the manner of life that millions of American church actors live out.
Some Scripture References
Here are some Scripture verses I was thinking of while I was writing this:
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:10-12
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.” Luke 12:4
“And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.” Luke 9:23-24
“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other Name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Matthew 13:44
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
“… looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2
How counter-culture, or even how counter sinful-human-being, is it to rejoice when others revile us? But we should. We should have great joy! Our reward is great in heaven. How insane is it to be brought before courts and in front of everybody refuse to renounce a religious figure? But that is exactly what every heart captivated by the beauty of Christ because of the gospel should do! We should always proclaim, always seek Christ above all, always say what is true according to God’s Word, the ultimate standard of truth. There is no greater reward than Christ Himself. What really does this sinful, broken, wretched, fading, temporal world have to offer us? Surely all it can give is worthless trash compared to what we get when we have Christ!
I have continued on for some time now. I have had trouble sleeping lately and so have been up late. It is now a little past midnight and I must quit writing. This post was written in about a hour’s span of time I suppose. I do not often write freely without heavy revision and editing, but tonight I have written with very little double-checking on my work. Please give grace as I’m sure it has been poorly constructed and there are spelling and grammatical errors. If there is a need and I have the time, I will try to correct any I find.
A Short Song
I actually wrote this part of the post first, but it would have been strange to me to put it at the top. I hope anyone who views this will enjoy it and give glory to God.
You chose me and called me as your own,
Made flesh from a heart of stone.
A filthy wretch made a child of the King.
All of the riches of the earth,
Cannot compare to your eternal worth.
Jesus Your voice is the only that will lead.
I will preach faith in God’s own Son,
I will testify to the works You’ve done.
Your Name is the only that can save.
When my name is mocked for speaking Yours,
My rejoicing shall abound all the more.
Eternal reward and Your approval I know are mine.
Such amazing love there is none but Yours
So when they bring me before their courts.
I cannot help but speak what I know is true.
Despised and rejected by the world,
The greatest treasure is in my Lord.
Not with me eyes but with faith do I see.
I tire and bleed as I carry my cross,
yet in Your will I will wholly walk.
Looking to Christ and His promises I endure.
If for speaking Your life they then take mine,
Let no hate be in me but love and grace divine.
May my death be a voice proclaiming Your good news.
In You I have victory,
Your pierced hands and beautiful face I will see.
Jesus, my great reward, You are forever mine.
